  1. It's quite funny how there's complaints in the Roman Senate records about this massive trade deficit. The numismatics of rome is also affected and you see that they reduce the gold, etc. content.
I recommend people to watch Sanjeev Sanyal talk about this

  2. Franken Stein
I read an article that claimed that the Romans even had access to sugarcane. Though it was such a rarity that it was often used as a fancy garnish or exotic ingredient for the rich, much like saffron is used nowadays.

  3. India doesn't produce much gold.
But Indian households & temples has largest Gold reserve.
    How? – Roman Trade.
10 years ago a temple in South India opened its voult , the value of only gold metal was then 22 billion dollar.

  4. I think you may have solved a Roman History problem that I had with the Rome's worsening inflation even though this was after Augustus , because you point out the trade imbalance with India drained gold reserves , maybe it was partly to blame for the Roman coins being minted by reducing silver /gold content until none remained and it was this that set off Rome's inflation . When the jurist Gaius wrote his Institutes he complains that the fines given to criminals were no longer severe because money had become debased . It was tantamount to a devaluation of the currency . Did this eventually kill off the Indian trade because Indian traders would no longer accept Roman money ? Or was it that the Muslims or others had cut off the trade routes and certainly by about 800 AD this was the case ?

  5. INDIA got rich off Rome – A Roman author famously complained that India has all their gold and all Rome has is silks and spices. Roman coins are so common still in India that they are a common feature in bridal jewelry. India raked it in form the Silk Road as did China, while Rome mostly spent its money in a huge trade deficit.
